BISMILLAH HIRRAHMANIRRAHIM

Alif

Alif -This is a letter which symbolises a question as well as calls out (to someone).

1) To question someone about something:

"azaid qaim" : is Zaid standing?

The answer would be simply "na'am" (yes), or "la"(no).

"Ya azaid qaim um Umaro" (is that Zaid standing or Umaro?).

In the Quran, in Hazarat Ibrahim's (Abraham) tale, it appears, "a anta fa'alat bialih naina" 21:64 (Is it you who have done this to our gods? Another example is: "a antum ashaddo khalqa umis sama) 79:27 Are you more difficult to create or the sky?

2) A question which is followed by a denial and that denial invigorates the positiveness such as :

"alaisallaho ya hakamil hakemeen" 95:8 Is Allah not the greatest of all rulers? Thereby meaning that Allah is the greatest of all rulers. Here alif is followed y "lais" or a denial, but the denial does not denote a denial of what is being said ahead, but its assertion. And that too, with force .

3) A question in which a sense of scolding is found , such as: " afa ghairah deenallahe yabghoon" 3:82 Do they want some other deen (the system to live in this world) other than Allah's deen?

Meaning, alas, do they really want such a deen?

4) A question which is tinged with ridicule: for instance Hazrat Shoaib's qaum( nation) telling Hazrat Shoaib: "asalatoka ta murka un natroka ma yabood abaona":

11:87 Does your Salat ask (us) to abandon the gods of our forefathers?

This sentence contains satire, ridicule and even wonderment. (Nawab Siddiq Siddiq Hasan writes that words in which baa and haa appear together carry the connotation of investigation, or to take out (make out) one thing out of the other.)

5) For expressing wonderment:

such as:" alam tara ila rabbikah kaifa maddiz zal" 25:45 Haven't you wondered how your rab (Lord) elongates the shadows?

Also see heading alif.

6) To warn if something is delayed: for example, "alam banil lazina aminu" 57:16 Has not the time come for the Believers to.......thereby meaning that the time has indeed come.

7) A question which is actually an order, like when we say: will you do this or not? The purpose is really to say that you will have to do it and if you don't do it.......Hazrat Ibrahim's (Abraham) father said to him:" raghib anta un a'lehati 19:46 Do you avoid my gods? It means, I order you not to do this; if you do so, "la rajmannaka" i.e. I'll punish you humiliatingly.

8) To equalise two things, but only when it appears after "sawaye" , for instance, "sawaun alaihim a'anzartahoom amlam tunzerhoom" i.e. whether or not you warn them (against the devastating results of their path) , it is similar (useless).

9) For calling out: "a zaid aqbal" 'o' Zaid, forge ahead! Quran is without this usage.

10) Such alif always appears in the beginning of a sentence, "awalam yanzaroo" o "awalam yaseeroo". Sometimes it is even omitted, for instance: before 'whether'. As appears in the tale about Hazrat Ibrahim or Abraham that at night when the star appeared, he asked his qaum (nation) : "qa'ala haza rabbi" 6:77 Is it my 'rab' (Lord)? Meaning , do you want me to worship it ?

Here the letter alif which is questioning has been omitted. Some people think that this (haza rabbi) is not uttered by Hazrat Ibrahim (Abraham) but his father (Azar) and the portion following thereafter "falamma qala la uhibbul afeleen" 6:77 is the answer by Hazrat Ibrahim(Abraham). In other words it is a dialogue . If so, then there is no need to consider the alif as omitted.

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

(Note: When one hamza is followed by a word which begins with another hamza, then the two hamzas together become an alif with a mudda'a. As in A'alan (what now?) which actually sounds like beginning with two alifs with 'zabar'.
