(Historically: The severe Calamity) (This is the 101st Surah with 11 short verses. Historic, traditional translations explain it as describing, the day of judgement, as the big catastrophe. It describes a chaos on that day after which people will be judged for their deeds. We present here a pure linguistic translation, utilising only the grammar and lexical rules applicable to the old classical Arabic, as described by renowned scholars. The sequence of events according to the most common understanding is the annihilation of all creatures, resurrection of the body and the judgment of all sentient creatures. The time of the Hour is not known however there are Major. and Minor Signs which will occur near the time of Doomsday and these have been documented. Again considering this book as a book of guidance in this world, and applying lexical rules, the following meaning becomes very striking, where it is describing the catastrophe or the calamity as a weakness of our duty as human being, with an impotence of thought and ignorance. It goes on to describe the aftermath of this ignorance as opposed to the result of utilising the reasons and logic which would eventually lead to graced and honoured life from your Protector and Creator. Qur'an uses its repetitive pattern here in an eloquent way to describe this principle to us.
Surah 101: 1 الْقَارِعَةُ The severe calamity is a weakness of duty, an impotence of thought and ignorance, and the magnifying of oneself in words without actions, and killing through grief and rage. Resulting in impugned character and making others feel intense aversion, disgust, and revulsion toward you. Surah 101: 2 مَا الْقَارِعَةُ Don’t be like the ones held within this severe calamity, due to a weakness of duty, impotence of thought and ignorance; and the magnifying of oneself in words without actions, and killing through grief and rage. Resulting in impugned character and making others feel an intense aversion, disgust, and revulsion toward you. And what grievous calamity befell you despite knowing that you do show off, and indulge in hypocrisy; and so become like the ones within a severe calamity, due to a weakness of duty, impotence of mind and ignorance; and magnifying oneself in words without actions, and killing through grief and rage. Resulting in impugned character and making others feel intense aversion, disgust, and revulsion towards you. How many of the created ones actually want to remain being weak, or incapacitated, you should exist as moths drawn down freely one after another into the lighted wick of illumination; those drawn to the illumination being the ones spreading, publishing and revealing events and knowledge. And so be what all were originated and brought into existence for: or else all become weak, incapacitated and smitten with the disease of corruption; a population separated like wool and having fear of everything. The very first creation, which was endowed with reason and logic and was graced, honoured, as the One’s pride. How difficult and troublesome these personal duties became for them. They became heedless and neglectful, so not in a state of living which is pleasant and approved Surah 101: 8 وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ And as far as ones endowed with reason and logic who are able to think quickly and intelligently, to break this state of living; they will be graced, honoured and will become the pride of the One. Surah 101: 9 فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ Because of which, this is ultimately a sufficient state. And what grievous calamity befell you in spite of you knowing that you do show off and indulge in hypocrisy, and hence you do not want to be in this ultimately sufficient state. Surah 101: 11 نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ That state is, to be in a beautiful light, from your protector and defender, of the most intense degree. Back to Surah list |
